A new research project has launched with the aim of developing a system for detecting threats to the electromagnetic space. Led by the IMDEA Networks Institute (a networking research institution that has been based in Madrid, Spain), the SOCRATES project has recently received funding from the New Security Challenges Division – Science Program for Peace and Security ( SPS). The other two collaborative partners on the project are a Swiss ElectroSense non-profit society (a venture that collects and analyzes spectrum data) and Katholieke Universiteit (KU) of Leuven of Belgium. Their work ends by May 2021.
In the 21st century, the protection of the electromagnetic spectrum is very important to society. In particular, wireless infrastructure that carries services such as cell networks and GPS is particularly critical. However, the price of freight radio technology is now so low that access is no longer restricted to governments and network operators. It is now affordable for individuals, giving them the potential to become malicious assault. These more frequent and more sophisticated threats from those attackers could disappear and are among the most serious challenges that society faces. Unauthorized transfers could threaten the operation of networks used by air traffic control systems, police, security services and emergency services, for example. The SOCRATES project will provide a security system to protect our electromagnetic environment and its services and the users that depend on it.
Dr. Domenico Giustiniano, Research Associate Professor at the IMDEA Networks, which coordinates the project, offers an overview of the project: "SOCRATES will provide an accurate and confidential, confidential, secure, secure & # 39 system ; i based on a novel and disruptive IoN (Internet of It) architecture. The SOCRATES answer will need to be suitable for real world operations. Giustiniano explains how this will be achieved: "We intend to test the SOCRATES system in controlled and realistic conditions, acting in licensed and licensed spectra. By providing the ability to identify, identify and locate potential threats to electromagnetic infrastructure security, OBSERVATIONS (Find and Location Large Scale Co-operative Threats in Electromagnetic Space, Grant G5461) is an important step in ensuring society's willingness to respond effectively to them.
