Mexico . The accompaniment of a child with diabetes after a diagnosis is essential for good health treatment and control, says the Mexican Diabetes Federation manager, Dr Christian Lugo, in a statement.
"At the time of diagnosis, parents feel confusing, wonder why their child has diabetes, what might have caused this condition, so they feel disappointed and fear that their son does not get normal development, "said the expert in the context of today's World Diabetes Day.
According to experts, in Mexico, the incidence of diabetes in children has been increasing and 10 babies with this diagnosis have six type I diabetes and four types II diabetes.
"When a child is diagnosed with diabetes, parents have a strong emotional effect, as it is a chronic condition that will require treatment and lifelong care," said Lugo.
To cope with this situation, the expert said that it was important for parents and family members to seek psychological support to acquire information and to prevent diabetes from limiting their lives.
He also explained the importance of listening to patients. "Doctors have to feel empathy for the patient, put ourselves into practice, build trust, give the child the conviction that he must use insulin and follow his treatment okay, "he said.
Dr Yael Contreras, in turn, said that it is important that children eat a healthy diet and eat a sufficient portion of food, as well as physical activity, check their glucose and learn how to properly apply insulin.
"These are very important aspects of glucose control to be adequate," he said.
Well-managed diabetes avoid the risk of complications such as kidney failure, diabetic feet, diabetic neuropathy and cardiovascular disease.
