(JTA) – The usual biography for Mariano Rivera includes the retired Yankees help channel in New York.

Add that he is a persuasive supporter of Israel.

Rivera, 49, spoke this week at a conference of Christian-united Israel in Washington.

Rivera, who himself ordained a pastor, began working with CUFI after meeting with the founder and chairman of the group, Pastor John Hazy.

"Every time I travel to Israel, it blows my opinion," said Rivera in Washington. "I wanted to see more, I wanted to understand more. I wanted to know more. The Bible comes to life when you are there.

According to the expert, Rivera was twice in Israel – once with his family and once with his church group and a group of rabbis.

The Bible speaks of Israel. Everything – from the New Testament, the Old Testament – is all about Israel and the relations of his people ", – said Rivera. "As a Christian, I understand that the chosen people of God are Israel – Jewish Israel."
