Prices for eggs in retail outlets vary considerably. The Latvian television program “Food Auditor” explains the differences between different categories of eggs and whether the cheapest are less valuable than organic chicken eggs.

In Latvia, chicken eggs are divided into four categories or by the method of keeping laying hens. Zolt contains eggs from organic hens, the first – eggs from laying hens, the second from hens kept in barns, and the third category – eggs from hens kept in cages.
To find out how much protein and fat is contained in the eggs of chickens raised under different conditions, 12 different egg samples – three from each category – were transferred to the laboratory of the State Scientific Institute “BIOR”.
According to the experts of the program, eggs are a good source of protein and are an essential component of the body, which provides various vital functions, such as participation in processes related to the growth and regeneration of cells and tissues of the body. But if the diet lacks carbohydrates and fats, our body can also use protein as a source of energy.
Analysis of the show shows that almost all eggs contain almost the same amount of protein, but most of them are in eggs and sheds. They are about 6.4 grams, or if we assume that a person weighs 75 kilograms, this is one twelfth of the recommended daily allowance of protein. Organic and free-range chicken eggs contain only a little less – about 6 grams of protein.
“Chicken eggs in a cage may have an even higher protein content, but in general this difference in protein content is very minimal, so unfortunately we can’t say that this is the main reason why you should buy, for example, this or that another chicken egg, because the difference is actually 0.1, 0.3 – units, which is very small in such a large section, “- explains the results of nutritionist Sandia Split.
Eggs contain not only protein but also fat. Eggs are concentrated in fat and are considered a source of unsaturated fatty acids, which should be taken in sufficient quantities. Unsaturated fatty acids are necessary for our internal organs, nervous system, muscle development and regeneration of all cells.
The average fat content in each of the tested eggs was about 4.5 grams. This time, the fat is present in two samples of organically grown chicken eggs, but almost as much in the chicken eggs contained in the cage. The lowest fat content should be in one sample of organic and free-range eggs and in one sample of eggs in a cage.
The nutritionist finds that he is surprised by the following results: “This section struck me more, namely that free-range chicken eggs have a higher fat content in eggs than, say, in chicken cages, which may therefore be an important fact. by purchasing eggs. “
Eggs also contain vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. For example, the body needs essential amino acids, folate and riboflavin, choline, as well as vitamins A, B12, D and K.
In 2019, the University of Latvia conducted a study commissioned by Balticovo. He analyzed all four categories of eggs and found that free-range chicken eggs contained slightly less vitamins A and E, but more vitamin D and biotin than chicken cage or barn eggs. Meanwhile, barn eggs contained the least vitamins B1 and B9.
Summarizing all the data obtained by the show, we can conclude that there are no big differences between the eggs of cages or sheds, free-range or organically raised chickens. They are all safe to use, and there is no evidence that only a certain category of eggs contains significantly more or, conversely, fewer nutrients, vitamins or minerals.
