Easter traffic is rapidly accumulating on highways north and south of Auckland as holidaymakers head home from a long weekend.
Traveling from Wellsford to Silverdale takes drivers almost twice as long – an hour on State Highway instead of 35 minutes.
From Wellsford to Auckland, congestion causes an hour of 20 minutes instead of the usual 54 minutes.
The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) predicts that the lowest traffic will be until 16:30 today between the cities of Pooh and Wellsford.
Drivers are encouraged to avoid peak periods or plan delays.
South of Auckland, there are long delays between Rotorua and Manukau.
The Auckland NZTA Traffic Dashboard indicates that the journey can take up to six hours, but Google Traffic updates the journey time by approximately three hours.
According to the NZTA information panel, traffic is particularly congested on State Highway 1 between Hamilton and Taupiri.
On CBD Highway between Bombay and Auckland, the CBD will travel approximately 11 minutes longer than usual.
Meanwhile, most traffic flows surrounding the capital are free.
So far, there have been no delays in the NZTA traffic information panel for the Hutt, Wairarapa and Wellington valleys.
NZTA reports a 15-minute delay between Levin and Vaikanai due to traffic jams in Otaki.
Traffic is heading south from Otaki to Peka Peka, and is expected to last until 18:00.
Motorists are urged to be careful on State Highway 2 / Remutaka Hill Road, as Metservice issues a strong wind warning.
