French news agency: Hoax on the first satellite of PH in space

A post of Facebook that included a picture and claimed that the first satellite of the country in space was fake, says Agence France Presse (AFP) on Friday.

Last October, the Facebook page, Imee Marcos for the Senedd Movement, published a photo that showed "planned satellite" with "Philippines" on its panels. The post also praised President Rodrigo Duterte for creating the satellite he said.

"Flat satellite lines pinakaunang Pilipinas ay napalipad na sa kalawakan. Si Tatay Digong ang nakagawa nito. [This is the very first space satellite of the Philippines that has been sent to space. Only Digong our father was able to do this.]"

However, the French AFP news agency found that the photo was used online for years in reports on China Tiangong-1 space station.

The AFP also confirmed by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) that the post did not show the country's first satellite. Gay Jane Perez, head of the remote sensor element and DOST satellite product product development said: "No, it's not."

Perez explained that Diwata-1 was the first satellite of the country, which was launched in April 2016. However, Duterte assumed his post as President in June 2016.

The misleading job was split for 700 times published by a page that supports Imee Marcos, the daughter of the dictator Ferdinand Marcos. / jpv
