BEIJING – China's attempts to prevent the spread of African pigeon fever were blown on Friday when the agricultural ministry confirmed that it had detected the first cause in wild boats, deepening a three-month crisis for the world's biggest pork producer.
The country confirmed the first case in the south-western province of Sichuan, a leading pastoral region of the country, raising the likelihood of having a big impact on pork supplies over the next few months.
The disease was found in a wild apple dead in the city of Baishan, Jilin province, in northeast China, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs stated in a statement published on its website.
"The new case means that African pig fever will be even more difficult to control. How do you manage wild bars?" Said Lord Guiding, analyst with the China Data Analyzer of China.
China has banned the transportation of pigs and live products from regions that have been infected with African pigeon and neighboring regions to control the spread of highly infectious disease, as well as prohibiting the feeding of kitchen waste to luggage.
But the virus has continued to spread despite government efforts, with more than 60 cases in 18 provinces across the nation since early August. It is estimated that a total of 33.5 million wildlife population, which can lead to the disease without showing symptoms. , according to Reuters calculations based on data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FARO).
Local authorities in Jilin have inspected neighboring areas attended by wild boom and have maintained a comprehensive sterilization of every pig farm in the area, the agriculture ministry said in its statement.
Analysts said the discovery of the wild booth suggests that the animals could come from China to bring the virus into China.
China has blamed feeding kitchen waste to pigs to spread disease.
The extremely agricultural disease was also found on a 40 pigs farm in the Yibin city, in Sichuan and southeast.
"With the new case in Sichuan, all the big pig producer states have now declined. The situation is very serious," said the Lord.
China kills around 700 million pigs a year. Sichuan produced almost 66 million last year, according to official data, more than any other province.
Sichuan is also the province with the highest consumption of pork in China at 36 kg (79 pounds), according to data from the Office for National Statistics.
Provincial authorities in Sichuan announced a ban last week on the importation of all live meats and pig products from other regions in an attempt to keep the disease out.
But Yibin is close to the Sichuan boundaries with the Chongqing towns and the Guizhou province, both of which have already identified cases.
Pig prices in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan, are the highest in the country right now, thanks to strong local demand and the collapse of the infectious disease of neighboring provinces.
Prices dropped 0.2 yuan on Friday from an earlier day to 17.7 yuan ($ 2.55) per kg, according to data collected by China-America Analytical Goods.
The discovery of African pig fever in Sichuan comes less than three months before the Lunar New Year celebrations in early February that indicate the peak of China's pitch call for pork.
There is no recovery and no vaccine for the disease, and the virus can survive for weeks in pork and feed. – – Reuters
