Serious shortcomings in diabetes care – Linkoping News

DADL. People with diabetes type 2 are currently not close to meeting the target levels established by the National Health Board. This is very serious and we do not see any signs of real ambition increasing. Half a million people in Sweden have type 2 diabetes and hundreds of other thousands of the disease have no knowledge of it. There are even more people a predecessor, known as prediabetes. All of these are at risk of serious complications due to the shortcomings that we can see in diabetes care.

Outcome of The ongoing patient survey The Diabetes Ball, which we are doing with the Netdoktor patient portal, shows, among other things, that the disease is accidentally discovered for seven out of ten, for example in connection with a health check in the health or corporate health center. This is a great improvement potential. Simple blood sugar tests could be offered to people at risk. If more had previously been diagnosed, much suffering could be avoided, while the cost of care would decrease.

Another result is that very few patients whose feet are explored. The National Health Board's guidelines are very clear that an annual footprint should be offered to all. The reason is that the damaged blood vessels lead to the loss of feelings, wound wounds and losses in the long run. But today's development goes wrong, and the survey is less offered. In our patient survey, only 58 per cent had had a thorough investigation during the past year. Here in Östergötland, the figure was 72 percent, which is far from the National Health Board's goal of 99 per cent.

Why not offered Everyone with diabetes in Östergötland has an annual foot survey, which can be very important in the long term? Are there structural barriers, or do not have primary care, time or resources for this simple measure that is a direct requirement in the guidelines?

Third result anxiety of self esteem, that is, the part of the care that patients themselves provide. It's about, for example, glucose measurements in the blood, insulin injections, medication dosage adjustments, and food and physical activity management. For this to work, training is needed. Here, the guides indicate that everyone with type 2 diabetes should be offered training for group patients. But only 18 per cent said in the survey that they were offered this. In Östergötland, the figure was as low as 12 percent.

Healthcare now needs to be done Östergötland take the strength to improve the care of people with diabetes. The results that we can see in the survey are that many people are at risk of serious complications such as severe cardiovascular disease, damage to the eye, kidney damage and impairments due to inadequate care. Not unnecessary.

Giving people with diabetes more influence over their treatment, offers modern diabetic drugs, provide medical help and training for lifestyle changes. Old fashion treatments are now being used too often so people with diabetes often get some booklets in their hands. Often with the admonition that "now start caring for yourself". We can never accept this as a patient's representative.
