But, fast moving forward by 2019 and coconut oil is advertised as the best choice for countless self-proclaimed wellness gurus and Instagram celebrities.
So, if you are confused about which fat is best, here is my look at it.
Extra Virgin Virgin Olive Oil
Virginia Extra Virgin Olive Oil is the main fat in the Mediterranean diet, often labeled as one of the healthiest diets in the world with a long list of health benefits.
The beneficial profile of fatty acids and a number of antioxidants that fight diseases are some of the key features of the olive oil. Moreover, olive oil is unrefined – it's just a juice squeezed out of fresh olives.
There is also a multitude of studies that address this oil with potential health benefits, such as lowering LDL cholesterol ("bad"), improving HDL cholesterol ("good"), reducing inflammation, and even improving the immune function. .
Contrary to popular belief, extra virgin olive oil is well suited for home cooking, as it has a relatively high point of smoke. But, before serving, it also gently sprinkle fresh salads and vegetables.
If you do not live under the rock, you will be well aware of the growing popularity of this so-called "superproduct" and the wonderful health claims that come with it (apparently everything from hunger to the health of the brain, can be improved with coconut oil). But, unfortunately, many of these allegations are not justified by science.
The fact that coconut oil is a key ingredient in the foggy Paleo diet, as well as in many "healthy foods" of vegetarian and gluten-free products, also supports her halo of health.
In the case that you do not know, coconut oil is a fat obtained from coconuts. It comes hard in a bottle and usually needs to be melted before use. Coconut oil is very rich in saturated fats, which are known to damage the health of the heart. In fact, coconut oil is 92% saturated fat!
Most "health gurus" explain that coconut oil acts differently on other saturated fats. Although some studies confirm this (as it boosts good "HDL cholesterol") that they usually do not mention, it also worsens "cholesterol of LDL" at the same time.
It is easy to understand why there are so many confusion around fats in our day (all you need to do is scroll through Instagram to be bombarded with conflicting health messages). But as a nutritionist, I'm here to tell you that there is simply no evidence (so far!) To recommend the use of coconut oil over healthy oils like olive oil (which has a number of scientific studies to support it).
Of course, the context of your overall diet is of paramount importance – and if another part of your diet is balanced and healthy, then over time, coconut oil will not suffer. But for your daily visit, I recommend to follow the old believers.
